Road Trip Tips

Raise your hand if you’re planning a weekend or an epic road trip this summer! We have one all set and I am super excited to get on the road and explore. Sometimes we have LONG days where we are in the car for what feels like forever, but other days are quick and easy. I have many road trips under my belt and I feel like I can confidently give you some advice on what will help ease some of your travel days.

Plan your snacks. Back in 2020 we took a road trip from Savannah, GA to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. With seven of us piled in a car we needed easy access to quick snacks. I grabbed a basket and had ready made snacks for the kids to grab when they needed one. This helped to not spend quadruple the price in a gas station, but also so that it didn’t feel like we were constantly digging around and supplying snacks. My term for this? The Snasket!

Take advantage of rest areas. With snacks set, I also like to pack a cooler with options for lunches. Having time to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air – all while once again saving money. Premade sandwiches, uncrustables, fruit and veggie trays – all the things you already eat when you’re at home.

First aid kit. Have a small box with the essentials. Band-aids, creams, tylenol, etc. It can help to add in a few extra tissues for those random nose bleeds; unless you have plenty of car napkins already!

Emergency car supplies. Jumper cables, fix a flat, spare tire and jack, flashlight, a blanket and proof of insurance….just a few for if you are on the side of the road and AAA cannot quite make it to you.

Paper Map or Atlas. Just me? But I love a map. I was beyond excited when I received an updated Rand McNally for Christmas one year. If you lose cell service or there is some sort of disconnect, a map will always be a helpful resource.

Entertainment. If you are the passenger, make sure you have books or something fun to entertain yourself while driving. On road trips I enjoy watching the scenery and will constantly point fun sites out to the kids, who are usually on a device or reading a book. Driving alone? Have an epic play list of all your favorites or audible books.
