A trip to the Vatican is an exciting adventure for anyone. But did you know there are rules and restrictions on what you can wear?? To help you navigate, here are a few pro tips.

The Vatican says, “low cut or sleeveless clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats are not allowed”. Here are some more specifics just so you aren’t denied entry when you arrive.
Simply put, your shoulders and thighs must be covered at all times.

Great options for women are long maxi skirts (with sleeves or a jacket over it) or comfortable and loose pants (linen and cotton are great options in the summer heat). Men can wear pants of any kind although I recommend a material that will keep you cool as opposed to heavier jeans.
There are no official restrictions on shoes, but flip flops and very casual sandals are frowned upon. You can wear other sandals, tennis shoes or any other comfortable travel shoe you have in your suitcase.
Now that you know what clothes to wear there are a few other things to keep in mind. If you display any offensive language or religious symbols you will not be allowed entry. It’s best to leave those shirts at home. If you have any offensive tattoos, just be sure to cover them completely.
A good rule of thumb is, if you think it’s inappropriate for the Vatican, it most likely is!
